For this assignment
for Dr. Griffin’s class we had to find the symbolic meaning of the poem “Mother
to Son” by Langston Hughes. Symbolism means the use of symbols to
represent ideas or qualities. The symbolic was that the
narrator was comparing her life with a staircases, but they weren’t crystal
stairs. The stairs had tacks and splinters, like life that’s it has situation
that hurt like a splinter in your foot. The first thing we did for this
assignment was read the story as a class like we always do, which I love. Dr.
Griffin reads the story with a tone of voice that helps me understand a little
better or get the understanding of what kind of situation the poems is, if it
sad or an exciting poem. After, we were on our own for this assignment, which
Dr. Griffin explain. We had to choose the background that represent the
symbolic meaning and we had to pick three line of the poem and write three
comments. The comments had to have the literal meaning and the symbolic
meaning. The hard part of this assignment was to find the symbolic meaning
picture. The symbolic meaning was obvious to find because it was the stairs. It
toke me a day to find a picture that I was satisfied with a staircases that was
said in the poem. I want a ruin staircases because that how the stair was describe.
Until, I finally found and stair picture I love. The stairs picture is a ruin
staircase but you can still walk on in. The poem stated you can’t stop going up
the stairs no matter how bad they are. Life hurts its does but no one said
there isn’t light at the end of the tunnel and in this case at the stairs. Life
is full of surprises but you just have to keep going no matter what. After, I
found the stairs and I choose the three comments which wasn’t hard. I kind of
put my life lessons in the symbolic meaning because everyone has had a rough
situation and I know how it feels, I had never gave up am still going until I
reach the end of my staircase. Putting my own feelings in the symbolic meaning
made it easier to write the meaning of it. Even though I was putting my feeling
in it, I still had to relate the symbolic to the poem which I did but it wasn’t
a big different. I did this assignment because with more poem assignment is
making it easier for me to understand the poems. Also, the poems Dr. Griffin choose
aren’t bad at all. All the poem he choose are like life lesson which what I like.
I like to learn something new every day.
